Designers today need to have the ability to design for manufacturing as it is the need of the hour. Almost all the mainstream design tools allow designers to convert their files to a 3D printing ready .STL format, and it is very important that you know this before going in a for a design tool.
Blender 3D is probably the only free to use and open-source design tool that allows you to export your design in the .stl format which can be used for 3D printing.
In this tutorial, we will show you how to use Blender 3D for 3D printing.
Step 1. Open the Blender 3D application on your Desktop/Laptop.
Step 2. Create a new file and save it with an appropriate name.
Step 3. Click on the default cube and press the ‘X’ button on your keyboard to delete it.
Step 4. Click on the ‘Add‘ button on the toolbar.
Step 5. Click on the ‘Mesh‘ option from the drop-down menu and select the ‘Cylinder‘ option. (We will create a 3d printable cylinder for this tutorial).
Step 6. Since we just want to print this cylinder as it is, click on the File button on the toolbar.
Step 7. Select the ‘Export‘ tab and click on the .stl option.
Step 8. Assign a name to the STL file and save it.
You can now use this STL file for your 3D printing application.
